Creating osu! Beatmaps

osu! enjoys one of the most polished and intuitive custom song editors in my opinion. To my knowledge, there are only three things that someone needs to create an osu! custom song (also known as a beatmap).

  • A song (usually in .mp3 or .ogg format)
  • A dream
  • A graphic is nice as well.
Laying the first circle of this custom song.

Creating a custom beatmap consists of timing the beat out, and then stepping through the song and placing notes as you see fit. There is a bit more to it than that but it is as simple as that to get started. You simply place a note, advance a bit in the song, and place another note where you feel another note should be placed. The placement of the notes is determined by your personal preference and creativity, although it is agreed upon that maps are most fun when they go along with the song well.

I will leave you with a capture of a map that my girlfriend made for the game. I intended to show off one that we worked on together but cannot do so due to technical difficulties.

“Flamingo” by Kero Kero Bonito, mapped by Doorchan. The gameplay is on autoplay.
